Winter Obstacles to be Aware Of

Do not attempt to cross Flowed Lands unless the conditions warrant. This herd path is tough to follow in areas if the route has not been broken out.

Route Overview

From Upper Works follow the trail to Flowed Lands and Lake Colden. The trail remains easy for the first 2-miles and then starts a steady climb toward Flowed Lands as it follows Calamity Brook and passes by Calamity Pond. Once at Flowed Lands depending on ice conditions it is common practice to hike over the Flowed Lands to access the herd path. You can walk along the frozen body of water right to the Herbert Brook Bridge where the herd path starts from.

If you don’t like the idea of hiking over the frozen waters you can also opt to use the trail, which goes up and over a decent sized hogback requiring additional elevation gain and loss.

Once at the herd path follow Herbert Brook as it climbs steadily up the mountain. If the path is not used it can be difficult to find when it goes in and out of the brook, and brook crossings are also difficult to locate. There is a decent view just before the summit and just off the summit toward Iroquois Peak. The summit of Marshall is wooded.
