Note: Sweet Fern Hill lies off of any developed and mapped trail system, so the use and understanding of GPS and/or map and compass is highly recommended. While bushwhacking you will experience hazards not found on a maintained trail. Expect more difficult and varying conditions, and always prioritize safety.
How to get there
Take Exit 29 off of Interstate 87 and follow Blue Ridge Road toward North Hudson, then take a left onto Route 9 to follow it north. Continue for 2.5 miles and turn right on Caza Turn Road, then take the next right onto Ensign Pond Road. Follow Ensign Pond Road for just under 3 miles to the trailhead on the right.
From the trailhead, take the left trail toward Hammond Pond. The trail is an easy hike with a bit of ascent. At the unmarked intersection take a left and descend a bit to the shore of Hammond Pond. Cross the outlet to the base of the hill. The climb is steep and rocky with odd footing at times and some small scrambles, but it is a fun climb. The summit is partially open with nice views.
