A fun part of every snowmobiling trip are those stops along the trail. Giving yourself and your group pre-planned breaks for rest and refreshment adds to the delightful time, no matter how long or short your loop may be.
As thrilling as it is rocketing along the trail, it is just as important to refuel; both the sled, and the appetite. Hanging up the helmets and enjoying a good meal is part of the fun, too.
Here are some welcoming pit stops.
A friend and I took our own break from the road to stop in at snowmobiling favorite Newcomb Bar and Grill.
This is also the informal headquarters for the Newcomb Snowmobile Club.
We were quickly joined by two groups of snowmobilers. It was a great day to be out, with sun and blue skies.
Large windows make the interior bright and cheerful. There's a pool table, dartboard, and jukebox.
The simple menu features housemade chili, pizza (which comes highly recommended), Philly steaks, and Michigans — which are hot dogs with a special meat sauce. We took our server's recommendation of the new jalepeno and onion cheeseburger from their variety of different hamburgers.
My companion beamed at her. "Wow, you simmered those onions and jalepenos together. This was great!"
Newcomb House is a popular local hangout and especially so in the winter, since the back of their parking lot has access to the C8B snowmobile corridor.
All downtown dining in Schroon Lake is available to the snowmobile owners who park their machines on the gazebo park grounds. After the ice is firmly set and tested, it can be safe to sled across the frozen Schroon Lake, but do be careful.
It's an easy walk to find many fine places, but here's a look at the two pubs.
The Timberwolf Pub is a local gathering place and center of many town events.
The appetizer menu has 14 choices. It can be difficult to choose, so they also have two different sampler plates.
The menu also has breaded shrimp, scallops, or chicken in a basket for that nostaligic drive-in appeal, six different Timberwolf burgers, and four kinds of grilled sandwiches.
Their motto is "good food, good company, and good times." Join them for breakfast with daily specials, lunch with homemade soups, and dinner.
Flanagan's Pub & Grill is a Irish Pub. They have daily specials, and today, I had the peppermint hot chocolate. Homemade. I could tell.
When the menu says “The Best Wings in the Adirondacks” I have to check them out. There are seven varieties and I am planning to try them all.
The menu has some welcome side trails, like pot stickers and crab cakes. After five the dinner menu features steaks, BBQ ribs, and turkey with all the trimmings.
We went for my favorite appetizer, the gluten-free coconut shrimp which is so good I have to share, so we also got the Nachos Deluxe, with fresh jalepenos.
St. Patrick's Day is Flanagan's anniversay, so that's also a great time to stop in. But then, any time is.
Sticks & Stones Bistro & Bar is at the edge of town, with plenty of parking. The rustic interior with stone fireplace is a warm and welcoming space in winter.
The owner is particularly proud of the special Italian pizza oven. There are sandwiches, bistro salads, and evening entrees like scallops, fresh fettucine, and steaks.
Even my gluten-free self can enjoy one of their signature desserts, the hard root beer float with vanilla bean ice cream, but there are many more. Like tableside s'mores and the Adirondack waffle with ice cream.
They also specialize in craft beer, boutique wine, and handcrafted cocktails.
With such a range of possibilities, and so many trails, the Schroon Lake Region makes a wonderful choice to spend your day sledding.
