This wilderness area, located in the towns of Schroon and Ticonderoga, has nearly 50 miles of trails and more than a dozen lean-tos should you be inclined to make this an overnight trip. The 46,000 acres are bounded by routes 9 and I-87 to the west, 74 to the north, 8 to the south and 9N to the east. It includes Pharaoh Lake, one of the largest in the Adirondack Park.

Access is via Crane Pond Road, a controversial entry into the wilderness area. Legally, the road is closed to motorized vehicles. There are also two parking lots off East Shore Road on the western boundary of the wilderness area.
